Grab your own Grifball Spartan at San Diego Comic Con

If you’re attending the San Diego Comic Con and are a fan of all things Halo 3, then you’ll likely be excited to hear that Toys R Us and McFarlane Toys are teaming up to sell the exclusive figure you see above during the show. Only 6,000 of these Grifball bad boys (or girls, because you really don’t know who’s under that 200 billion-dollar suit of armor) are being sold at the show, and you can grab your own for $15. We suggest making this a priority stop, as the figure features a Bomb, Gravity Hammer, Recon armor, and Sword Hilt, with the latter two being pretty big deals in the world of spinning space rings, we hear. Also, 6,000 isn’t a lot when you consider 126,000 people attended the show last year.

San Diego Comic-Con goes down from July 23-26 at the San Diego Convention Center.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/playstation/PS3_Slim_sized_up_smaller_deeper_no_Linux_or_PS2′; At this point, would-be PlayStation 3 buyers have two options: wait until next month to get the ultra-hip PS3 Slim model for $300, or plop down that same figure now for its chunkier older brother. As far as we can tell, unless you’re absolutely dying to load Linux or another OS on top of the console, or have some strong aversion to matte finishes, there’s really no incentive to purchase one right now without a more drastic price cut — or if you’re really lucky, perhaps you can find one of the older, discontinued models that can still play PS2 games.

Killing Floor mod gets standalone Steam release

March 11, 2010 – 4:50 pm

The popular UT 2004 mod, Killing Floor will get an upgraded, standalone release on Steam, courtesy of Tripwire Interactive. According to Voodoo Extreme, Tripwire was approached by the mod’s original designer to create a port of the survival-horror shooter that would run on Red Orchestra. Tripwire decided Killing Floor could do better and offered to purchase the rights to the game and help the original team bring an upgraded version to Steam in standalone form.

Like Left 4 Dead, Killing Floor — which originally released in 2005 — features enemy hordes making violent rushes to halt player advancement. The game will feature six-player co-op play, nine different monster types (varying from physical predators to weapon wielding foes) and a stockpile of different weapons for players to use. Killing Floor also includes a persistent perk system allowing players to set themselves apart from other survivors with skill and ability upgrades — something we think L4D’s Louis would have loved to have, to help fight off his most traumatic attack. No release date has been announced.

Natal Xbox 360 in 2010 rumor is back on

March 11, 2010 – 4:50 pm

Although Microsoft’s marketing department likes to keep its execs on a short leash, you really should listen to its CEOs when they espouse launch schedules. They are, after all, CEOs and tend to have the big picture (like dates) related to major projects that drive revenue. Recall 2008, when Bill Gates told the world that Windows 7 would arrive in 2009 causing Microsoft marketing to scramble-out a redaction attempting to reset expectations for a 2010 launch. With Windows 7 now officially launching in October, well, guess who was right? Fast forward to last month when Steve Ballmer made a similar slip saying Project Natal would arrive in 2010 causing Microsoft to issue a statement that a launch date had not been confirmed. Now DigiTimes is reporting that Aptina has won the exclusive rights to equip Natal with a 1.3 megapixel CMOS image sensor required for Natal’s camera. More importantly, the Taiwanese rumor rag says that shipments of the “new version of the Xbox 360 console” are slated for the second half of 2010 — a date that sounds like Fall to us as previous rumored. Of course, DigiTimes was absolutely certain that Microsoft was integrating Blu-ray into future (that’d be 2008) Xbox 360 consoles too, so take this rumor for what it is: rumor.

45 Second Booth Tour: Microsoft

March 11, 2010 – 4:50 am

We’re privileged enough to get the chance to walk around and view the numerous multi-million dollar E3 booths, so we figured we’d share the experience. Albeit, condensed into 45 seconds. View Microsoft’s E3 booth in the 45 Second Booth Tour vid that’s embedded above and click through the photos below. If you can spot Cliff Bleszinski, we award you a (virtual) scrumptious brownie.

PSP Go disassembled, reassembly still in question

March 11, 2010 – 4:50 am
Well, the PSP Go may still not be available to the general public just yet, but the folks at levelup.cn have somehow managed to wrangle one out of Sony’s hands, and have promptly gone and done what appears to be the first proper disassembly of the device. While there’s expectedly not a whole lot of surprises, we do get a good look at the now non-removable battery (pictured above), the on-board memory, the familiar nub and controls and, of course, the complete lack of any UMD remnants — not to mention a curiously placed GameCube watermark. Hit up the link below for the step-by-step teardown.

Video: PS3 Slim’s Japanese commercials likely to cause fear, distress, and confusion

March 10, 2010 – 4:50 pm

The folks at Palm may think they’ve learned how to make some creepy commercials, but let’s face it, they’ve got nothing on Sony. The Japanese company has a long history of discomforting, unexplainable advertising that rivals a David Lynch movie — in fact, Lynch even directed his own television spot back in the PlayStation 2 days, itself reminiscent of UNKLE’s “Rabbit in Your Headlights” music video from years before. This latest set of videos for the PS3 Slim in Japan is no exception. Turn off all the lights, raise the volume of your speakers, and bow down before the masters of unnerving gadget promotion just after the break — we included the Lynch ad, too, in case you were interested.

Talent agency lists Hans Zimmer scoring Modern Warfare 2 [update]

March 10, 2010 – 4:50 am

Update: Robert Bowling has confirmed Zimmer is contributing music to Modern Warfare 2.

Hans Zimmer is a pretty prominent composer on the Hollywood circuit, winning awards for his music for such films as Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean and As Good As It Gets. He’s even worked on a game before, contributing original material to The Simpsons Movie: The Game.

If the composer’s listing (PDF link) at GSA Music is to be believed, he’s also composing the score to surefire multi-billion seller, Modern Warfare 2. We’ve reached out to Infinity Ward for comment and will get back to you as soon as we can.

Wii getting $50 price drop this month? One Toys R Us ad seems to think so

March 10, 2010 – 4:50 am

Of all the fakeables in consumer electronics, the weekly newspaper ad has to be one of the easiest marks. Still, this one looks pretty legit, and if it’s real it means either we’re getting a much overdue Wii price cut on September 27th, or someone on the Toys R Us ad team has been severely misinformed. If it’s not true and we have to wait another holiday season for the Wii to break the $200 mark, we’re not getting Nintendo that Snuggie we promised it for Christmas — everybody knows only good little boys, girls and multinational game companies get presents.
