MTV True Life looking for gamer addicts

February 8, 2010 – 4:50 pm

“Have video games totally taken over your life? Is your game play increasingly getting out of control? Have your friends or family confronted you about your gaming habit? How about your marriage or personal relationships - are they being affected? Is it difficult to balance work and gaming time? Do you sometimes skip doing homework or household responsibilities to play? Have you played video games as a way of escaping your problems? Has your game playing habit become so encompassing that you may need to go to rehab to kick it? If you can identify with any of the above, MTV wants to hear from you.” — Actual MTV casting call, in verbatim.

While we agree video game addiction can be a problem, especially if it gets in the way of your social life, we doubt appearing on a MTV reality program is the best solution for shaking the habit. If you don’t want your 15 minutes of fame, consider taking the Joystiq Two-Step Plan to Stop Playing Games[TM]. Step one: buy Terminator Salvation. Step two: Play it. You’ll learn to hate games in minutes! Pretty soon, you’ll want to go outside and make friends — all without the embarrassment of being on the same network as Tila Tequila. You can thank us later.

ProtoDojo turns NES controller into flash drive with Konami-level security

February 8, 2010 – 4:50 pm
The humble NES controller has certainly provided plenty of inspiration for mods over the years, and even a little dreaming, but it doesn’t look like the well is showing any signs of drying up just yet. The latest to take a crack at the iconic gadget is one man shop ProtoDojo, which did what many others have done and turned the controller into a flash drive, but went the extra step of adding an ingenious security measure to ensure that only true NES veterans are able to mount the drive. We won’t spell it out here, but let’s just say this drive stands a better chance at Contra than most — all possible thanks to the magic of Arduino, as you might have guessed. Head on past the break for a complete overview on video.

OnLive demonstrates iPhone app, set to redefine mobile gaming?

OnLive demonstrates iPhone app, set to redefine mobile gaming?

Okay, we admit to still being a little bit unsure about OnLive’s pledges for high-end, high-resolution, lag-free gaming on any ‘ol device with bandwidth, but we want to believe, and so it’s with skeptical optimism that we report on news of mobile implementations. The company has demonstrated an iPhone app in which users are able to play against gamers on a PC or on the company’s MicroConsole — despite not having a single button to press. It’s interesting stuff but, according to OnLive’s CEO Steve Perlman, it’ll be awhile before we see this in the wild, as plans for initial mobile apps will be limited to checking game stats and watching live gameplay. However, we presume it’ll be a small step from there to flip the switch and two-way communications, meaning that perhaps by the time Modern Warfare 3 hits the wires you can keep gaming even while you’re commuting.

So you enjoy playing video games, right? That’s what probably brought you to Joystiq in the first place. But have you ever thought about making your own? Right now you’re probably thinking, “But, Kevin… doesn’t that take millions of dollars and a huge development team?” Well you happen to be in luck, because the answer is no. Sony apparantly puts PSP Extended Life Battery Kit back on sale

February 7, 2010 – 4:50 pm

What a wild ride this thing has had. Originally announced back in November of 2007, the PSP Extended Life Battery Kit promised to provide right around 20 percent more battery life in exchange for $45 and an additional bulge. Then, Sony seemingly canned the thing abruptly in August of 2008. Just a month later, Sony’s US director of hardware marketing John Koller confessed that the PSP-3000’s new screen would eat away more severely at the battery, but that an extended cell would solve the quandary for a few of your hard-earned dollars. Now, it seems he’s finally making good on that proclamation, with the PlayStation Portable Extended Life Battery Kit back on the outfit’s website for $44.99. At least one user over at the official PlayStation forums has already received one, but at the moment, SonyStyle is showing the item as backordered. Might as well get in line, yeah?

Majesco cooks up compliance with Nasdaq

February 7, 2010 – 4:50 am

Majesco has regained compliance with the Nasdaq stock exchange after completing a stint of ten consecutive days with a stock price of over $1. When asked for comment, Cooking Mama exclaimed, “RONDERFUL!”

The publisher is known for Cooking Mama and … um. Anyway, last August, Majesco was informed it had 180 days to get its stock back in compliance with Nasdaq rules or face delisting. Optimistically, buying the stock now at its bargain price would be fantastic if Majesco can find another franchise (A Boy and his Blob?) worth its salt and pepper.

Video: Spawn Labs HD-720 aims to be the Slingbox to your game console, we go hands-on

February 7, 2010 – 4:50 am

Sure, your heart may be aflutter with thoughts of gaming cloud services like OnLive and OTOY, but quietly making its debut this week is Spawn Labs with its “Bring Your Own console” HD-720 video game streamer, due out this November for $199.95. In a nutshell, the device works as a Slingbox for your Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PS2, or GameCube and lets you play those consoles over the internet on your Windows PC (a Mac client is said to be in the works). The AV cables — component or composite, no HDMI at this point — are connected and can be then passed through to a TV as normal. A USB connection is used to sync up the controller, and there’s also an IR signal for turning the connected system(s) on and off. On the computer, you can log the Spawn Labs website and play either your own system or jump onto one of your friends’ systems for some faux-local co-op or to be a spectator.

We had a chance to take a look at the streamer and talk with some of the minds behind it at TechCrunch 50 to fill in some of the missing details. In a fairly controlled environment — the device hooked up via ethernet to a private router on the show floor — we were able to competently play Soul Calibur IV with what we were told was around 100ms audio / video and 5ms controller lag. Under ideal situations, it streams 720p / 30 frames per second in H.264 video with AAC-LC audio, but that can automatically downscale when the connection slows — should we decide we’re too lazy to make it from our bedroom to the couch to play Halo (an all too frequent scenario), it’ll clearly work fine over a local network, but it’s gonna be how well it works across that internet that’s the real deal-breaker, and we weren’t able to test that. Cross-continent play isn’t recommended, but you can have spectators from all over the world and it won’t at all affect your latency. Any PC controller can work and be custom-mapped, including just keyboard and mouse, although if you’re wanting to use a PS3 pad you’ll have to find the drivers for it yourself. The game window itself has buttons along the bottom for pulling up the system’s specific guide menu or recording the video for upload to YouTube. What’s impressive to us is that it’s said to work with any computer that can handle a 720p video stream, and so far in the labs they’ve apparently got it working well on an ION-based netbook — but we didn’t get to see that for ourselves, so we’ll hold applause until we can put it through its paces ourselves. See a video demonstration for yourself after the break.

Miyamoto expects sustained sales for New Super Mario Bros. Wii

February 6, 2010 – 4:50 pm

Nintendo’s resident gaming legend, Shigeru Miyamoto, foresees long-term — nay, long-tail — sales for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a prospect that isn’t completely insane when you take a few things into account:

  • The game has Mario in it.
  • Its DS counterpart is the second highest-selling DS game of all time and has sold consistently since its release in 2006.
  • It’s super fun.

So, when Miyamoto says that the game “will continue selling even after one year has passed” during a play session in Japan (translation), we have a tough time arguing with the guy. Any sane person would, right?

Nyko ships $25 Zoom Case for DSi: because your DSi totally needs a zoom lens

February 6, 2010 – 4:50 pm

Remember that wacky zoom lens attachment for Nintendo’s DSi that was launched back in January? Amazingly, the product design team convinced everyone else in the company to move ahead with plans for production, and now it’s making its way out to cold, steel shelves. $24.99 buys you a hard shell case for your handheld along with a detachable optical zoom lens, which supposedly gets your sensor eight times closer to a given subject than Nintendo ever intended. You’ll also be mocked eternally if you’re ever caught using this in public, but hey, maybe you’re thick-skinned.
