Microsoft’s X10 press event has come and gone, and with it came a stack of Xbox-related news, trailers, screenshots and more. It was so much content, we nearly broke the Internet! Alright, that’s probably inaccurate but we have to assume we were close.
Are you a currently unemployed Software Engineer? If so, here’s a recession antidote of an altogether different stripe: Microsoft is taking applications for a LIVE Community Director, whose job it will be to manage “LIVE community strategy and execution across a range of properties, from Xbox LIVE to Windows Mobile.” The posting then goes on to discuss how the team will be tasked with constructing a next gen, LIVE-enabled platform across the web, the console, mobile and more… which, you know, sounds a little bit like the Live Anywhere concept. Either way, it sounds like the company might be doing a little more than merely contemplating its mobile strategy, Shane Kim’s recent interview notwithstanding. What are you waiting for? Dust off that resume and hit the read link.

Sega has confirmed that it will not release Aliens vs. Predator in Germany. Following a report that suggested the publisher would avoid the German market altogether, we contacted Sega, which explained that the game wouldn’t make it to retail in Germany “without significant cuts that would harm the gameplay experience.” The publisher maintained that AvP was “developed to be consistent with the existing content in the Aliens and Predator universes,” and added that the “gameplay and graphical and narrative style befit the mature themes” of the franchises.

AvP is expected to receive an “18 rating” (or the equivalent) in territories outside of Germany and an M rating in the US. When asked about the status of the title in Australia, Sega told us that there was no word yet from the region. It would certainly be interesting if the German market was ruled out due to the game’s violence (and the threat of not receiving a rating by USK, the German ratings board), but Australia and its similarly stringent board prove more accepting of the content. We’ll continue to follow up with the publisher.

This latest gesture of goodwill comes in the form of an announcement that NVIDIA will indeed be licensing its SLI graphics technology to Intel and various motherboard manufacturers for use in upcoming Core i5 and Core i7-based systems, which Intel describes as the “perfect complement” for each other. Intel further goes on to say that “NVIDIA and Intel share a combined passion for furthering the PC as the definitive platform for gaming,” while unconfirmed reports also have NVIDIA holding up its fingers in a comical gesture behind Intel’s head during the announcement.

You know, when you’re stuck in traffic and you think about changing lanes, but decide not to, reasoning with yourself that everyone else will and you’re better off staying put? The lane to the left keeps moving and yet you stand still. So you go left and, what happens? Yup, you’re stuck, while the right lane starts moving. Briskly.

Capcom finds itself in just such a position today, as it announces the delay of Dark Void into 2010 “in order to get the game out of the crowded fall game season,” the company’s Chris Kramer tells Joystiq. The Airtight Games-developed jetpack-’em-up will find a new home in Capcom’s fiscal fourth quarter … which is the increasingly crowded Q1 2010 calendar period, which ends in March.

Precisely what competition could Capcom be so afraid of? GameStop (of course, never an accurate reflection of actual release dates) listed Dark Void as touching down on September 22 … the same September 22 in which Halo 3 ODST finally stops preparing, and just drops. When asked about the delay, Kramer said, “The move will be great for the game and for gamers: less competition in the market (curse you, Halo!), more time for polish.”

So, just to make sure we’ve got this right: Capcom avoided releasing Dark Void in the relatively open September ‘09 period to avoid a “crowded” gaming season, opting instead for 2010 … the same 2010 that now houses release dates for the similarly delayed Splinter Cell: Conviction, Bioshock 2, Singularity, Bayonetta, Red Steel 2, and probably Mafia II and Red Dead Redemption. Oh, as well as the already planned God of War 3, Heavy Rain, MAG, Darksiders, Aliens vs. Predator, Alan Wake, Dante’s Inferno, Mass Effect 2, Sin & Punishment 2, White Knight Chronicles, Split/Second, and Capcom’s own Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2.

… boy, that right lane is looking awfully appealing again.

Not much more to go on than that, unfortunately, but you can learn even less from Fujitsu’s teaser video after the break.

After last week’s Rockstar spouse letter, we got in contact with a couple of trusted sources at Rockstar San Diego to find out more information about exactly what’s happening inside the studio. Though our sources asked to be kept anonymous, each independently brought up the poor state of the Midnight Club franchise — a series traditionally handled by the Rockstar San Diego team. “Jay Panek and Mark Garone, people who were at the company for over 10 years, were fired in 2009 after the completion of Midnight Club: LA … other major people quit, as they lost hope in the company after the handling of MC:LA and didn’t want to work on Red Dead Redemption,” one source told us.

“The management slowly dismantled the MC team for reasons unknown to most,” added another. When we asked if there are any more Midnight Club games planned for development at Rockstar San Diego, we were told, “At first, the team was told there was going to be another. That lasted a few months until the team was told, ‘Well, we’re going to do another, but it will be all outsourced … but there will be a core team of 5 - 15 people at RSSD working on it.’ Then, after a while longer, it was just not going to happen at all. Rumors abound about what will happen to Midnight Club, but Take-Two want something soon because it was the second highest money maker for Rockstar.”

The issues surrounding Midnight Club stem from a number of things, according to our sources. “New York management not giving us realistic release schedules” is prime among them, with repeated accusations of last minute changes and mismanaged planning. “Anyone from the New York office is feared, because people in the San Diego office know that they are unstable and needy … in other words, if a comment comes from a person from New York, it’s a mandate that needs to be immediately addressed regardless of previous priorities.”

We’ve reached out to Rockstar for official comment, but have yet to hear back as of this publishing. If you work/worked for Rockstar Games and would like to speak to us on or off the record, we’re all ears.

At any rate, Sony has already selected Andrew House (pictured) to take over on May 1st, with a release noting that he will soon be responsible for “managing the PlayStation business across nearly 100 countries in the Europe / PAL territories, including the company’s PlayStation2, PSP and PlayStation 3 platforms as well as PlayStation Network.” Oh, and Mr. House — we’re fully expecting a ‘CE-Oh No He Didn’t!’ quip from you within the first hundred days. Make it happen.
